چکیده

[1] We present a case study of a remarkable upstream O and N ion outflow event. We present observational evidence for spatially structured outflow of these Low Charge State Heavy Ions (LCSHIs) of magnetospheric origin along a small reconnected field line region within the framework of a magnetic cloud of an ICME. From the particles’ in situ 3D distribution function we conclude that in this case the interaction of the outflow with the bow shock is small. We conclude further that the gyrophases of outflowing ions at the reconnection point are randomly distributed. This leads to the formation of a flux tube with a specific geometry. In particular, the outflow reveals spatial dispersion and non-gyrotropy. This result has implications for the size of the dayside reconnection site.

Spatial distribution of upstream magnetospheric 350 keV ions

We present for the ®rst time a statistical study of 350 keV ion events of a magnetospheric origin upstream from Earth's bow shock. The statistical analysis of the 50±220 keV ion events observed by the IMP-8 spacecraft shows: (1) a dawn±dusk asymmetry in ion distributions, with most events and lower intensities upstream from the quasi-parallel pre-dawn side (4 LT± 6 LT) of the bow shock, (2) hig...

Association of Low-Charge-State Heavy Ions up to 200 Re upstream of the Earth’s bow shock with geomagnetic disturbances

[1] We present the first study of Low-Charge-State Heavy Ion (LCSHI) events covering a region from Earth’s bow shock to the L1 point, obtained with the Suprathermal Ion Composition Spectrometer onboard Wind. STICS is capable of distinguishing charge states of suprathermal ions. In 1995–2000 we found a large number of particle events revealing species of magnetospheric origin. LCSHI events tend ...

Early Time Interaction of Lithium Ions With the Solar Wind in the AMPTE Mission

The early time interaction of an artificially injected lithium cloud with the solar wind is simulated with a one-dimensional hybrid code. Simulation results indicate that the lithium cloud presents an obstacle to the solar wind flow, forming a shock-like interaction region. Several notable features are found: (1) The magnetic field is enhanced up to a factor of about 6, followed by a magnetic c...

The Bastille Day Magnetic Clouds and Upstream Shocks: Near-earth Interplanetary Observations

The energetic charged particle, interplanetary magnetic field, and plasma characteristics of the ‘Bastille Day’ shock and ejecta/magnetic cloud events at 1 AU occurring over the days 14–16 July 2000 are described. Profiles of MeV (WIND/LEMT) energetic ions help to organize the overall sequence of events from the solar source to 1 AU. Stressed are analyses of an outstanding magnetic cloud (MC2) ...

Magnetospheric cavity modes driven by solar wind dynamic pressure fluctuations

[1] We present results from Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) global, three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. We use these simulations to investigate the role that solar wind dynamic pressure fluctuations play in the generation of magnetospheric ultra-low frequency (ULF) pulsations. The simulations presented in this study are driven with idea...
